The Maya Biosphere Reserve (Decree 5-90) covers 2,090,667 ha, 'a fifth of the national territory', across six municipalities (Las Cruces, La Libertad, San Andrés, San José, Flores, Melchor de Mencos). Community forest concessions (ACOFOP) cover 448,090 ha. Operating inside the reserve requires a contract with CONAP plus an environmental impact study (Decree 4-89, article 20).
