Treatment plants in Villa Nueva (private and public)

~150; ~25% working well

2017República

Low. Villa Nueva concentrates '150 plants… private and public' for treatment, of which only about 25% were working properly in 2017 (República, May 15, 2017). The Villalobos river basin 'contributes more than 95% of the water' reaching Lake Amatitlán, and the river carries 2.50 m³/s (2,500 L/s) of wastewater and 1.5 million tonnes of sediment a year (AMSA 2016, cited by EMPAGUA and República); the basin covers 14 municipalities and more than 2 million inhabitants (Prensa Libre, Mar 17, 2021). For an entrant held to ESG standards the differential is large and visible.
