The Maya Biosphere Reserve (Decree 5-90) covers 2,090,667 ha — 'a fifth of the national territory' — across six municipalities (Las Cruces, La Libertad, San Andrés, San José, Flores, Melchor de Mencos). The core zone is 'restricted to research, conservation, protection and low-impact ecotourism'; the multiple-use zone is set aside for the sustainable use of resources; the buffer zone allows farming, livestock and forestry. Community forest concessions (ACOFOP) cover 448,090 ha. Operating inside the reserve requires a contract with CONAP plus an environmental impact study (Decree 4-89, article 20). Still to be researched: the master plan in force and the tourism concession model (Uaxactún, Carmelita, El Mirador). No 2023-26 hotel pipeline with figures was found for Petén; in 2014 Petén held 9.3% of the country's 'recommended' hotels and the Wyndham/Ramada Tikal Isla de Flores was already operating.
