Domestic credit to the private sector is equivalent to 37.2% of GDP in 2025 and 36.8% in 2024, according to the World Bank's FS.AST.PRVT.GD.ZS indicator. At that level Guatemala is under-banked relative to its peers: credit is scarce and expensive for small and medium-sized firms without a track record. But the system is profitable, well capitalized and structurally liquid, so for a large formal investor the problem is not obtaining credit but its cost in quetzales and the collateral demanded.
