Renewable generation
2,958 GWh of 4,373 GWh generated
First four months of 2025MEMIn the first four months of 2025, renewable sources supplied 2,958 GWh of the 4,373 GWh generated in the country, according to Ministry of Energy and Mines data cited by Revista E&N. An article in Prensa Libre's C-Studio section (24 March 2026), which closes by promoting Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, states that renewable generation grew 17.9% in 2025. According to Energía Estratégica (29 August 2025), the spot price fell more than 40% in 2025 compared with 2024; using AMM data, the average spot price went from US$214.17/MWh in May 2024 to US$124.07/MWh in May 2025, a change the outlet relates to the rebound in renewables, mainly hydropower, and the sharp fall in the use of diesel and bunker fuel. The same outlet says hydropower remains the dominant technology and that solar generation grew with the entry of new projects, among them the 66 MW Magdalena solar project in Escuintla. In May 2023 the Minister of Energy and Mines, Alberto Pimentel Mata, stated that Guatemala has a policy in place requiring at least 80% of the electricity consumed to come from renewable sources by 2030 (Government of Guatemala press release, May 25, 2023). According to CNEE data analysed by Energía Estratégica, in the first 16 days of September 2025 the renewable share showed signs of stagnation, averaging only 43.1% of generation, and the mix rested mainly on coal and natural gas.
