San Gabriel plant investment (Prensa Libre)

US$500 million

ReportedPrensa Libre

Cementos Progreso (CEMPRO) is a near-monopoly in cement. Its San Gabriel plant in San Juan Sacatepéquez carries a reported investment of between US$500 million (Prensa Libre) and about US$1,000 million (Dinero HN), a discrepancy still to be reconciled. Dinero HN reports a capacity of 3 million t/year (a kiln of 4,500 t of clinker a day), taking the group's total above 5 million t/year with La Pedrera and San Miguel; CEMPRO itself reports 2.2 million t/year for San Gabriel. The group expanded into Costa Rica and El Salvador for US$335 million (Bloomberg Línea, 2022). The honest constraint is the long-running community conflict in San Juan Sacatepéquez around San Gabriel, to be treated with sources from both sides.
