World Bank/UNODC series (VC.IHR.PSRC.P5): 45.7 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2009 (the peak), 32.8 in 2017, 18.2 in 2020 and 23.4 in 2023. Series based on police data (InSight Crime, 2025 Homicide Round-Up): 16.1 in 2024 and 17.4 in 2025, a rebound of 8.0%. Both series were verified in audit, but they are not directly comparable with one another. InSight Crime attributes the 2025 rebound to rivalries between the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and local criminal actors.

The research is written in English; quoted figures, source names and the titles of legal instruments stay in the language their source published them in.

This layer is research: read from public sources by the archive's own team, every claim cited with the date it was consulted, and audited where it is marked so. It has not entered the verified store — no figure here was fetched back from its source or stamped with a retrieval time — so it wears no red provenance numeral and never mixes with the verified figures.
