The UN-backed International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) operated from Dec 2006 to Sep 2019; President Jimmy Morales did not renew its mandate. Between 2008 and 2019 it helped dismantle more than 70 criminal structures, and a 2022 study estimates that it may have prevented between 20,000 and 30,000 homicides.
