In April–June 2025 informality stood at 45.2% in the metropolitan urban domain, 65.4% in the rest of urban Guatemala and 77.8% in rural areas; open unemployment ran in the opposite order: 3.9%, 2.1% and 1.4% respectively (INE, ENEIC Bulletin No. 1). The full Q4 2024 publication puts the formal sector at 32.1% of the employed population and the informal sector at 67.9%, with female informality at 74.2% against 63.1% for men. For an investor, the pool of formal workers is concentrated in the metropolitan area, which also has the highest open unemployment.
