Hotel and room stock and its legal classification

INGUAT had 4,651 registered lodging establishments (hotels, motels, guesthouses) in June 2026. The only national room count found dates from November 2014: an INGUAT statement to Hosteltur that the figure 'se sitúa en 15.000' — 15,000 rooms, written with the Spanish thousands separator — now 12 years old. ECLAC (CEPAL, 2016, drawing on INGUAT 2014) counted 'category I' hotels suitable for international tourism: Guatemala 66 establishments/3,425 rooms, Antigua 74/1,262, Panajachel 33/751 and Esquipulas 23/732; Sacatepéquez had 154 establishments, 2,130 rooms and 6,225 bed places (2013). Hotel employment was 12,498 permanent staff + 2,062 temporary, 1 permanent job for every 3.3 occupied rooms (ASIES 2014). The legal classification is the Regulation for Lodging Establishments, Governmental Agreement 1144-83: Group 1, hotels of 1–5 stars; 2, motels; 3, guesthouses A/B/C; 4, hostels A/B/C.
