There is a conflict documented by the press in 2016 over the diversion and depletion of rivers (for example the Madre Vieja) by sugar mills on the south coast (Escuintla–Suchitepéquez), but the dossier did not recover a citable source in this pass and leaves it as 'Not found' (to be searched in the Prensa Libre/Plaza Pública archives).
