In 2024 there were 24,978 extortion complaints (+38% on 2023), according to OSAC, which warns that part of the increase may reflect a greater willingness to report. In June 2026, 1,264 complaints were recorded in the month, with a year-on-year rate of 112.7 per 100,000 (against 151.4 in June 2025) and 8,707 complaints in the first half (5,320 fewer than in the same period of 2025); the year-on-year rate has now fallen for 11 consecutive months. CIEN warns that, without a victimization survey, less crime cannot be told apart from less reporting.

The research is written in English; quoted figures, source names and the titles of legal instruments stay in the language their source published them in.

This layer is research: read from public sources by the archive's own team, every claim cited with the date it was consulted, and audited where it is marked so. It has not entered the verified store — no figure here was fetched back from its source or stamped with a retrieval time — so it wears no red provenance numeral and never mixes with the verified figures.
