It is the worst area for water-intensive industry. In the eastern dry corridor (Chiquimula, Zacapa, El Progreso, Jutiapa) rainfall runs 400-500 mm a year in parts of Jocotán and Camotán, with recurrent droughts; Wikipedia records annual values 'below 500 mm' in the semi-arid areas of Zacapa, Chiquimula and El Progreso. The government is drawing up in 2026 a contingency plan against climate threats for the dry corridor (Infobae, 19 May 2026). The potential conflict is with domestic water use. The CNB source proved inaccessible during the audit.
